Introduction
In a significant move towards enhancing corporate transparency and accountability, the Indian government introduced the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) framework in 2023. This new framework is designed to promote sustainability and responsible business practices among India’s top 1,000 listed companies. In this blog post, we will delve into the details of the BRSR framework, its structure, and the key principles it encompasses.
What is BRSR?
The BRSR framework is a comprehensive reporting framework that requires companies to disclose their sustainability performance and progress towards their goals. It is divided into three sections: Section A (General disclosures), Section B (Management and process disclosures), and Section C (Principle-wise disclosures).
Section A: General Disclosures
Section A includes general disclosures that provide an overview of the company’s sustainability performance. This section includes information on the company’s sustainability policy, its commitment to sustainability, and the key performance indicators (KPIs) used to measure sustainability performance.
Section B: Management and Process Disclosures
Section B focuses on the management and process disclosures that provide insights into the company’s sustainability management systems and processes. This section includes information on the company’s sustainability governance structure, its sustainability goals and objectives, and the processes in place to achieve these goals.
Section C: Principle-wise Disclosures
Section C is the most comprehensive part of the BRSR framework, covering nine principles that are essential for sustainable business practices. These principles include:
Environmental Protection: This principle focuses on the company’s environmental performance, including key performance indicators such as electricity consumption, water usage, and air emissions.
Human Rights: This principle emphasises the importance of respecting human rights, including the prevention of human rights violations and the provision of minimum and fair wages.
Integrity: This principle highlights the importance of ethical business practices, including anti-corruption, anti-bribery, and conflicts of interest policies.
Employee Well-being: This principle focuses on the well-being of employees, including parental benefits, employee accessibility, and the percentage of unionised workers.
Inclusive Growth: This principle emphasises the importance of policies that favour vulnerable and marginalised groups.
Sustainable Goods and Services: This principle focuses on the company’s investments in social and environmental impacts, including information on sustainable products and services.
Responsible Consumer Engagement: This principle highlights the importance of responsible consumer engagement, including handling consumer complaints and feedback, product recall procedures, and cybersecurity and data privacy policies.
Stakeholder Responsiveness: This principle emphasises the importance of engaging with vulnerable and marginalised groups, including descriptions of engagement with stakeholders.
Responsible Public Policy Engagement: This principle highlights the importance of responsible public policy engagement, including listing trade and industry affiliations and detailing issues relating to anticompetitive conduct.
Conclusion
The BRSR framework is a comprehensive reporting framework that requires companies to disclose their sustainability performance and progress towards their goals. By understanding the structure and key principles of the BRSR framework, companies can better navigate the reporting process and enhance their sustainability performance.
